Theory into Practice- Becoming an Expert in a Subject

How Social Media and Technology have had a negative impact on society

Quotes:

  • “In this age, you must be relentlessly remarkable to stay relevant, if not you will be relegated.”
    ― Bernard Kelvin Clive
  • “Never presume to know a person based on the one dimensional window of the internet. A soul can’t be defined by critics, enemies or broken ties with family or friends. Neither can it be explained by posts or blogs that lack facial expressions, tone or insight into the person’s personality and intent. Until people “get that”, we will forever be a society that thinks Beautiful Mind was a spy movie and every stranger is really a friend on Facebook.”
    ― Shannon L. Alder
  • “A fixation with connecting with 'friends' online comes with the risk of disconnection with friends waiting for you to be present in the offline world.”
    ― Craig Hodges
  • “Time is ticking, and your online twinkling is limited.”
    ― Santosh Kalwar
  • “Social media inflames our already inflated view of self.”
    ― Mandy J. Hoffman

Statistics/facts:

  • Users spend an average of 30 minutes per day on Facebook
  • In 2012, Medical News Today reported on a study suggesting that Facebook use may feed anxiety and increase a person's feeling of inadequacy.A more recent study, led by social psychiatrist Ethan Cross of the University of Michigan, found that using Facebook may even make us miserable."On the surface, Facebook provides an invaluable resource for fulfilling the basic human need for social connection," says Kross. "But rather than enhance well-being, we found that Facebook use predicts the opposite result - it undermines it."
  • In 2012, Anxiety UK conducted a survey on social media use and its effects on emotions. The survey found that 53% of participants said social media sites had changed their behaviour  while 51% of these said the change had been negative.
  • 24% of Americans and 28% of Brits have admitted to lying or exaggerating on a social network about what they have done and/or who they have met.

Theory into Practice- Map of Understanding

To start off this brief our task was to 'dissect' our essay into subsections including quotes, arguments, facts ,places, names, events etc. in a Map of Understanding.

This is mine so far:

My topic is extremely broad, and in some sense- vague. I have began exploring the most obvious themes within my essay and the things that I am most interested in; this will develop the further I look into particular issues and movements.

I have already noticed particular links within the different areas of interest, which is something that I hope in the future will be largely recognised in order to target the triggers that the problems of online usage can cause.
